Now with some additional years of experience and much new reading (still, not enough... starting classes full time again has slaughtered my reading pace) behind my initial post, I have come to some conclusions: mostly that I'm still not a huge fan of cyberpunk (during it's prime anyway... We wanted to write avant garde, high-lit books that used the tropes of SF, with the added factor that our books had a rebellious, anti-establishment quality—the punk thing. I almost included this as an honorable mention as it was probably written around 2000. It would be really frustrating for me not to be able to do that. In terms of traditional science fiction, it brings technology out of the background of the narrative and into the forefront. Would Herbert's career have taken off better if he had self-pubbed it with no hassle? No matter; if you've never read Le Guin (or speculative fiction) before, this is sure to get you to seek out her other books.
