Upon examination, Talbot discovered that it is the lost Vesper psalm from a set of five composed by Vivaldi in 1739 for the Pietà. Most of his operas were written for Venice, but some were commissioned for performance in Rome, Florence, Verona, Vicenza, Ancona, and Mantua. He also remained active as a composer - in 1711 twelve concertos he had written were published in Amsterdam by the music publisher Estienne Roger under the title l'Estro armonico (Harmonic Inspiration). In the scene reproduced here, Wozzeck finds himself in a crowded bar after having cut Marie's throat; near the end of the scene, the crowd discovers blood stains on Wozzeck's arm, inspiring him to flee.

Johannes Brahms didn't give these hugely popular gypsy dances an opus number because he didn't consider them original compositions.
